BeKZN Theme 2023 | In my own Backyard

Act Locally to make a difference Globally

The theme for the club this year aims to make you focus on the amazing richness in your own garden, or favourite space, park or verge. And improve it! We would like people to develop checklists for their own garden, take photos of the birds, favourite plants or niche areas of your garden. Send them to us and they will be displayed under each persons name and area. Hover over each square to identify the garden and area and then click on it to see and read more – each garden will have its own page! You will enjoy seeing your garden published.

Send history, text and photos, describing the development of the garden, bird checklists, photos of birds, butterflies, plants, reptiles, any critters and the garden spaces you feel are important. You don’t need to do all of these things but importantly, the changes you make to improve biodiversity each month need to be sent in to be added to your page. Update your bird checklist monthly – if you like listing you can add your insect list, reptile, fish and mammal list too.

Each month there will be a tip which may detail a plant to add, technique to try and maybe even a few give-away garden products that will enhance your garden’s value for birds.

How to join:

Please deposit R100 into the BeKZN bank account (all details at the bottom of this page) to enter your garden/park/verge. No garden too big or too small. We really are looking for club members to participate – no apathy – let’s show the value of belonging to a club. We can have fun and make a difference at the same time.

We have 25 backyards which equates to almost 50 members taking part.

Go to your fields and your gardens, and you shall learn that it is the pleasure of the bee to gather honey of the flower,
But it is also the pleasure of the flower to yield its honey to the bee.
For to the bee a flower is a fountain of life,
And to the flower a bee is a messenger of love,
And to both, bee and flower, the giving and the receiving of pleasure is a need and an ecstasy.
The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
