New Germany N.R. outing Wed 8th May.

New Germany N.R. outing Feedback.

8 people were blessed with perfect weather at New Germany N.R. this morning. Birding was not easy as the birds weren’t calling much and some were recorded on call only. Altogether we saw or heard 42 species, which is not bad for this time of the year.

Of special interest were about 6 lesser striped swallows (over-wintering?), a female Klaas’s cuckoo (this was a real challenge!), a pair of fiscal flycatchers, and the alligator (! !) at the hide dam which has been reported before.

Gill and I stayed on until about 12 o’clock  and we were able to add quite substantially to the species that were seen by the group.

“Working For Fire” seemed to be preparing for a burn of the grasslands soon, so I think that the reserve will be spectacular for wild flowers this coming Spring.
Anyone on the outing requiring the full list of birds seen is welcome to e-mail me  ( sandidup@telkomsa.net )
