Weekend away August 2nd-4th is at River Valley Nature Reserve.  This is a small private reserve near Margate on the Ivungo River with good habitat. Conveniently situated for Mpenjati and Umtamvuna reserves. There are 5 camping sites and 2 cottages each with 2 en-suite double bedrooms. First come first served. Book direct with the reserve Ph:0832635537 or mentioning BLPN and then advise Mike – or Jane –

Saturday 3 August. Bluff Nature Reserve at 7:00 with Elena Russell. Please phone to confirm meeting time. Tel: 031-7052902 (after 6pm). There is an entrance fee but they take Wild Cards – bring your tea basket and relax afterwards either in the picnic area or the hide.

Directions: Take the Bluff turnoff into Edwin Swales Drive (which now has a new name) and head towards the Bluff. Turn left into Bluff Road and then right into Old Mission Road. Go right at the circle (still OLD Mission Road) and then left into Grays Inn Road. Turn right into Tara Road. The entrance is about 1 km along Tara Road.

Wednesday 7 August. Pigeon Valley N.R. 8h00 with Sandi du Preez – Tel. 031-7014839 or 0733324431. A small, remnant patch of coastal bush which once covered the whole of the Berea.

Directions:- Follow South Ridge Road from Tollgate, towards the University. Turn left into King George V Ave. then right into Princess Alice Ave. The entrance is on the right. Bring chair, coffee/tea and eats for picnic afterwards.

Tuesday 13 August. 09h30 Krantzkloof talk. Peter Spence talking on “A Guided Birding Trip to Central Mozambique”

Wednesday 14 August. 08h30  Springside with Derek Spencer. Directions: From M13, turn off at Hillcrest off-ramp. Turn right at traffic light into Old Main Road. At Heritage Market, turn right into Stonewall. Travel under the subway and at the T-junction turn right into Springside Road. Continue along this road until you see the reserve on your left.

Wednesday 14 August. Indoor Meeting with Gary Jones. Subject:  “Equipped for Bird Photography”. Venue: Westville Methodist Church, Jan Hofmeyr Road, Westville.

Sunday 18 August. Kenneth Stainbank NR with John Dives. Contact details to confirm meeting time: email; tel: 072 139 5862. It is always interesting to visit birding spots in different seasons. The Leonotis should attract sunbirds in the winter and there may be Natal thrush about.

Directions: From Edwin Swales Drive, take the Wakesleigh Road turn-off. Turn left into Sarnia Road, travel for 2 km then turn right at the traffic lights into Coedmore Quarry Road. Travel for 3 km, the entrance to the reserve is on the right at 90 Coedmore Avenue. YellowwoodPark  Pay the entrance fee of R20 for adults and R10 for children, proceed left to the car park . Wildcards and Golden Rhino cards are accepted. MEET AT 07:00. Bring refreshments and chairs for afterwards.
