Wednesday Evening Talk with Nicholas Theron – 12 November 2014

Dear all,

We are indeed very lucky to have BirdLife South Africa’s conservation manager for KwaZulu Natal, visiting us as guest speaker on the 12th at the Westville Methodist Church, Jan Hofmeyr Rd., Westville.  Nicholas Theron is based in Underberg, has a delightful wife Rina who monitors the Blue Swallow nesting sites and he is kept very busy travelling all over the province visiting Important Bird Area sites, seeing to coastal bird counts, attending meetings with organisations like KZN Wildlife and the Wildlands Trust, checking on the mining applications in the province, and reporting back to BLSA on a regular basis as to what is happening on the ground here.  Nick has also taken over from Trish Strachan as chair of BirdLife Sisonke.  I have got to know him through Forum meetings, and I do not think we could have a better person for the job.

He will be speaking on “The Conservation of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in KwaZulu-Natal” – please do not think this will be a dry and dusty presentation, come and see for yourselves what is being done for the Amur Falcon, the Southern Bald Ibis, the Southern Ground Hornbill, the Blue Swallow and the Secretary Bird amongst others.  I also believe that it is very important that we show our support for Nick and his work – we are the biggest club in the province, and he needs to know we’re backing him and we know what’s happening, both close to eThekwini and further afield.

So come and meet Nick on Wednesday and enjoy the good cheer which Rob always brings to the Westville evenings.  See you there at 19.00.

Best regards
