It’s BirdLife eThekwini KZN’s 75th Anniversary this year

Firstly the BeKZN Committee wishes all our wonderful members and friends a fantastic 2024!

Secondly we cannot let another minute of this first day of 2024 without announcing and reminding all of you that 2024 is …

our Albatross Jubilee – our 75th Anniversary

Why an Albatross Jubilee – well the club has already celebrated a Diamond Jubilee as its 60th Anniversary in 2008. A 75th  Anniversary is also sometimes referred to as a Diamond Anniversary. To avoid repeating this moniker we have therefore have decided to mark this our Albatross Jubilee.  The reasons for this are good ones.

  1. the logo of the club is an albatross,
  2. we are a club situated on a coastline that hosts many seabirds, including a number of albatross species and,
  3. the major Mouse Free Marion project is in full swing aiming to ensure these birds remain on our shores.  We therefore thought it appropriate to use this iconic group of birds as part of our celebration.  A pelagic trip or two off Durban will also be part of the celebrations.

The club has a special logo which will identify our presence and this milestone throughout the year.

To start off the celebrations we want to announce that we will also be running a number of special events throughout the year to celebrate including a BeKZN Big Year throughout 2024 which will have four categories:

  1. eThekwini municipal boundaries to celebrate the city’s diversity and for those of you who don’t want to travel further afield,
  2. a KZN provincial boundary challenge
  3. a South Africa challenge
  4. a World challenge

Please look out for the flyer and rules for participation in this particular event coming soon. In the meantime please log the birds on BirdLasser that you are seeing or keep a dedicated list so you can present it when needed.

I would like to give my apologies as we have a family wedding on that week and will be in the Midlands. So sorry to miss this wonderful AGM and am sure everyone will throughly enjoy themselves. Thanks to Nicky and all the team.

As a matter of interest, does anyone know the exact date the Club was founded? I was born in 1949.
