BeKZN Sit-In | New Germany Nature Reserve

20 June 2024

T’was a cold and windy day, but the people were brave and came out in force!  This time instead of seeking shade, we found a sunny place to sit, and most people immediately poured their coffee. The early comers were greeted with a friendly Kurrichane Thrush.

Some people then decided to go for a lengthy walk in the reserve to warm up! While the sitters braved the cold they were rewarded with a few Sunbirds, namely Amethyst and Olive. The latter was so puffed up against the cold that it showed off its yellow pectoral tufts. There was also a confiding African Dusky Flycatcher and a small flock of Black-bellied Starlings

Not over much was seen except for a beautiful female Black Cuckooshrike which decided to show itself off to the walkers and then came through the picnic area for the sitters…

The walkers came back with a mystery bird that they hadn’t been able to identify. Luckily a photo was taken which cleared up the mystery!

We ended up with 37 species.
