BeKZN Sit-in | Jubilee Park

7th September 2023

On Thursday morning 7th September 2023 a group of 9 birders gathered at Jubilee Park. This gathering was in honor of John Hinck who was, with Marion his wife, a great champion of Jubilee. John had worked tirelessly over the years to restore and upgrade Jubilee to what we see today.  A place where there is an abundance of bird life enjoying the enhanced habitat engendered by John.

It was a bittersweet walking in his footsteps on the ground that he loved so much. Each member was asked to pull 10 invasive alien plants in memory of John as we did our walk.  Birding was slow, but the cheerful call of the Southern Black Tit and the descending whistle of the Spectacled Weaver had us seeking out and soon seeing these birds.

Thick-billed Weaver was seen flying over the reed beds and creating quite a scuffle.

Cape White-eyes came into the tree adjacent to where we were sitting and went busily about their business of gleaning quite unconcerned by us gathered around.

We had an interesting interaction with a Tree Agama.  The female was lying quite comfortably along a branch when a beautifully coloured male presented himself.  After playing cat and mouse with each other for a short while we treated to some Tree Agama porn and then with a shake and shuffle, they were both off on their individual pathways.

There were many beautiful butterflies to make up for the lack of birds.  40 species were seen in all.
