BeKZN WALKS | DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS

3 May 2025

After our originally planned walk in March was unfortunately rained out, we were delighted to return to the Durban Botanic Gardens for a second attempt—and this time, we were rewarded with perfect birding weather. The skies were clear and the sun was shining, making for a beautiful autumn morning in the gardens.

Fifteen enthusiastic birders joined the walk, including a few welcome newcomers to the club. The group was split into two smaller parties to make birding more enjoyable and manageable—one group led by Carryn and the other by Ismail. This allowed for a more relaxed pace and better opportunities to spot and discuss the birds we encountered.

The Durban Botanic Gardens, with its magnificent array of indigenous and exotic trees, provided excellent habitat and viewing opportunities. The towering canopy and well-kept understory offered shelter, food, and perching spots for a wide variety of species. It’s always a pleasure to bird in such a rich and diverse environment.

By the end of the morning, the groups had tallied a combined total of 44 bird species. Highlights included a Malachite Kingfisher at the pond and a pair of Chinspot Batis near the lonely cycads. The cherry on the top for everyone was a Peregrine Falcon that was happily perched in a tree near the entrance and posed for photos for an extended period of time. The vibrant bird activity served as a reminder of just how valuable green spaces like the Botanic Gardens are for urban biodiversity.

Many of our members also took the opportunity to visit the BirdLife eThekwini stand at the Autumn Plant Fair, which was taking place in the gardens on the same day. It was a great chance to connect with the wider birding and conservation community, and to support local initiatives.

All in all, it was a rewarding morning of birding, socialising, and enjoying the beauty of nature right in the heart of Durban. A big thank you to our walk leaders, Carryn and Ismail, and to everyone who joined us. We look forward to seeing you on the next outing!
