Back-to-Nature Bird Day

Mainly for the kids…well sort of…

18 September 2022

BirdLife eThekwini KZN (BeKZN) partnered with our colleagues at Kloof Conservancy and the Kloof Scouts to hold a Bird Day on the 18 September with a focus on kids and bird related children activities. The event was held at the Kloof Scout Hall at Memorial Park. Kloof Conservancy aimed to raise funds for the refurbishment of the Scout Hall.

While the weather dawned a bit murky the four of us – Ticky, Anneli, Steve and Nicolette – were soon ticking off birds at the venue, with 18 species literally recorded in the first 5 mins while we were putting up the BeKZN gazebo and other accoutrement.

A lucky draw hamper which included birding goodies was drawn at the end of the day
The lucky winners were Cherese and Cullen Duffield – both new members of the club!

Kids activities included going on a bird walk in Memorial Park which was led by BeKZN personnel Steve Davis, Mark Liptrot and the guest speaker Craig Widdows. Craig did a talk on his big birding year with his family after the walk which was delayed slightly by the load shedding.

Also on offer was face painting, Bird Pairs Memory Game, under the careful guidance of Cecily and Colouring In competition with Anneli.

A total of 85 kids came through and interacted with birds, telescopes, binoculars and chatted birds.

In general a fun morning was had by kids of all ages.
